Show me Your ways, O LORD; teach me Your paths. Lead me in Your truth and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation; on You I wait all the day. (Psalm 25:4-5, NKJV, emphasis added)
His truth is salvation and we know this through waiting with great hope.
But as for me, my prayer is to You, O LORD, in the acceptable time; O God, in the multitude of Your mercy, hear me in the truth of Your salvation. (Psalms 69:13, NKJV)
Once again we find David in trouble and in need of some help. What you see is not always reality and David calls out for deliverance in the truth of God’s salvation. The salvation of the LORD is truth and by it David will be rescued. How comforting is it to know that the holder of reality is our God? Only the Lord knows the big picture and how things will play out. I want to place my decisions, my will, and my life in His hands to do what is best for the kingdom and for me.
But as for me, my prayer is to You, O LORD. David could whine and complain that things are not going well for him (that is my usual response). Instead he does what a person of character would do: he prays and waits on the LORD. The LORD is Yahweh, the covenant keeping name of God – He will keep His promises because His promises are truth.
In the acceptable time. Here is a statement in Scripture to support the phrase, “Timing is everything.” David was willing to wait on God and acts as our example in times of adversity: wait on the Lord to act in His timing. If want something done right let God do it in His timing.
In the multitude of mercy. Again we see that mercy is related to truth. Mercy is not getting what we deserve: defeat and judgment. Rather God extends mercy and gives us victory; ultimate salvation is ours in the truth of the Lord. Wait on God.
Mercy and truth go together and we learn this through waiting.
Mercy and truth have met together. (Psalm 85:10, NKJV)
Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but to Your name give glory, because of Your mercy, because of Your truth. (Psalm 115:1, NKJV)
We continue to see this union of mercy and truth in Scripture. There is stated here a combining of mercy and truth in God’s work in man. Mercy is needed so that man can be extended the Lord’s grace. Truth is manifested by God’s promises. Without mercy and truth working together we can get a false impression of the Master we serve. God is merciful and He is truthful. We need to recognize this synergy as we wait on the Lord with great hope.
Wait on God in prayer and get the proper impression of Who He is in both being merciful and being truth and the comfort it brings to you. Thank Him for His mercy and truth.
