Christ Delegates His Authority in His Post Resurrection Ministry
The Apostle Paul’s authority came from Christ. All workers for the Kingdom get their authority from the Prince of the Kingdom. We all may have different gifts and will not be as well-known as the great apostle, but we have the same source of authority.
For even if I should boast somewhat more about our authority, which the Lord gave us for edification and not for your destruction, I shall not be ashamed. (2 Corinthians 10:8)
What is my reward then? That when I preach the gospel, I may present the gospel of Christ without charge, that I may not abuse my authority in the gospel. (1 Corinthians 9:18)
Therefore I write these things being absent, lest being present I should use sharpness, according to the authority which the Lord has given me for edification and not for destruction. (2 Corinthians 13:10)
For you yourselves know how you ought to follow us, for we were not disorderly among you; nor did we eat anyone’s bread free of charge, but worked with labor and toil night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you, not because we do not have authority, but to make ourselves an example of how you should follow us. (2 Thessalonians 3:7-9)
By our choice we become the children of God. Authority is translated right in this verse. By enlisting in the army of the Revolution we become children of God. Children of the King have a delegation of authority by position – it is the legal authority of the children of God that we possess to carry out battle in the Revolution.
But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name. (John 1:12)
Authority is control over situations. Authority is translated control in Acts 5:4 and gives another nuance to the concept of authority. The person with the authority makes the decisions. Our authority is Christ and we follow His decisions and we have His delegated authority to carry out His orders.
While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God. (Acts 5: 4)
Paul’s commission came with power to complete his mission. Authority is worthless if there is no power to carry it out. The power of God was behind his commissioning.
I will deliver you from the Jewish people, as well from the Gentiles, to whom I now send you, to open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in Me. (Acts 26:17-18)
Our commissioning is backed with the power of the risen Savior. The Great Commissioning was an official edict from the Supreme Commander, enforceable with the full power of the Kingdom.
And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. (Matthew 28:18-20)
The Lamb Gives His Authority (Power) to Angelic Beings and the Two Witnesses
Authority is always delegated from the top. The Lamb that has been slain is the delegator of authority to carry out God’s wrath upon the wicked and to deliver His people in the Book of Revelation. We see this in all the following places:
So I looked, and behold, a pale horse. And the name of him who sat on it was Death, and Hades followed with him. And power was given to them over a fourth of the earth, to kill with the sword, with hunger, with death, and by the beasts of the earth. (Revelation 6:8)
Then out of the smoke locusts came upon the earth. And to them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. They were commanded not to harm the grass of the earth, or any green thing, or any tree, but only those men who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads. And they were not given authority to kill them, but to torment them for five months. Their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it strikes a man. (Revelation 9:3-5)
They had tails like scorpions, and there were stings in their tails. Their power was to hurt men five months. (Revelation 9:10)
For their power is in their mouth and in their tails; for their tails are like serpents, having heads; and with them they do harm. (Revelation 9:19)
And I will give power to My two witnesses, and they will prophesy one thousand two hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth. These have power to shut heaven, so that no rain falls in the days of their prophecy; and they have power over waters to turn them into blood, and to strike the earth with all plagues, as often as they desire. (Revelation 11:3, 6)
And he was given a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies, and he was given authority to continue for forty-two months. (Revelation 13:5)
It was granted to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them. And authority was given him over every tribe, tongue, and nation. (Revelation 13:7)
And he exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence, and causes the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. (Revelation 13:12)
And another angel came out from the altar, who had power over fire, and he cried with a loud cry to him who had the sharp sickle, saying, “Thrust in your sharp sickle and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth, for her grapes are fully ripe.” (Revelation 14:18)
And men were scorched with great heat, and they blasphemed the name of God who has power over these plagues; and they did not repent and give Him glory. (Revelation 16:9)
The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast. (Revelation 17:12)
After these things I saw another angel coming down from heaven, having great authority, and the earth was illuminated with his glory. (Revelation 18:1)
