Show me Your ways, O LORD; teach me Your paths.  Lead me in Your truth and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation; on You I wait all the day.  (Psalm 25:4-5, NKJV, emphasis added)

The house of God is a pillar and ground of the truth and we are a part of this by waiting on Him with great hope.

But if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of truth.  (1 Timothy 3:15, NKJV)

Paul is writing Timothy to instruct him how the local church assembly is to be operating.  The local church, as part of the larger universal church, is referred to as the pillar and ground of truthThe Nelson Study Bible offers the following concerning this phrase:

“Misconduct and disorder in the local church weaken the support for God’s truth in the world.  Godly men and women gathering together in local assemblies to worship the Lord produce an orderly church, a church that testifies to others the truth of God.”

How you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God.  Timothy already knew how to conduct himself as a disciple of Paul and pastor of the local church in Ephesus.  Paul’s relationship with Timothy was that of father to a son (1 Timothy 1:2) and he had trained Timothy in ministry through on the job training in their travels together.  Paul is addressing those in the assembly, as to their conduct.  Church discipline and the discipleship of the believers are in view here.  Timothy’s job was to teach and lead by example, so his congregation would behave Christlike.  The church, in being a witness to the pagan world around it, needed to conduct themselves in a manner worthy of Christ.  Truth is Christ and believers are to bear His image in truth.

Which is the church of the living God.  In the Greek church is the called-out ones.  The church is a body of believers called out of the world into salvation through the grace of God.  This word was used of pagans for the meeting of citizens by the town officials.  The local church is then seen as an assembly of believers in the one true and living God.  As we wait upon the Lord we need to be empowered to be the church called out and separate from the world.

The pillar and ground of truth.  The Greek word for pillar is a stay, a support, a prop, a post.  Ground is firm, stable ground, base, support, or foundation.  The church is thus a pillar, a prop or support of the truth.  As members of the body of Christ our conduct matters.  People are watching us to see how we act.  Are we acting in love or with bitterness?  Are we patient or angry?

We are to support the truth within us by living with Christlike character and purpose.  Waiting is the process God uses to shape our character and understand our purpose.  Slow down.  Don’t rush.  Be still and know that He is Lord.
