Show me Your ways, O LORD; teach me Your paths.  Lead me in Your truth and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation; on You I wait all the day.  (Psalm 25:4-5, NKJV, emphasis added)

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth and we know this by waiting on Him

But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.  And you will also bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning.  (John 15:26-27, NKJV, emphasis added)

The promised Helper, the Spirit of truth, Jesus sends from the Father.  Our Comforter, our Advocate, and our Helper in all things Jesus our Lord sends to us because we are in great need.  The Eleven had been trained by the Master Rabbi, but the training was short and will become complete on the day they enter eternity.  Likewise the Holy Spirit of truth is with us who need to be instructed and trained in righteousness.  Our need is tremendous.  The Spirit of truth is sent for our benefit, but more so for the glory of God.   Ephesians 2:10 states, “We are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”  This is the purpose of God.  This is why the Spirit of truth is sent.  We are a work of God and need to be helped in the process of sanctification because we are not able to do it ourselves.  But also recognize the Spirit is sent by the Father.  The Father is loving and good and will give good gifts to those who ask of Him (Matthew 7:11 and Luke 11:13).  The promised Helper is a gift and we should thank the loving Father for Him.  The Father wants us to wait upon Him with great hope and receive the promised gift.

The Spirit of truth will testify of Christ.  The Spirit of truth will testify of Christ for Jesus is the Truth (John 14:6).   It is quite interesting to note that this passage from the Upper Room Discourse is sandwiched between teaching the disciples about the world’s hatred of them and the Christ (John 15:18-25) and their pending rejection from the Jews (John 16:4-5).  The Truth is going to be rejected by man, but in the midst of tribulation the Spirit of truth will be working on hearts, testifying of Jesus.  The Truth will never be without a witness – it must be heard.  Though man will try to hide from the Truth the Truth will find them because the Spirit testifies of Christ.  But those who wait upon God listen to the testimony of the Spirit of truth and are moved towards the love of the Father.  The response of the disciple to the testimony of the Spirit is fruitfulness as Jesus stated moments earlier in John 15:9-17.

You will also bear witness.  The working of the Spirit of truth in the life of the believer is the witness of a fruitful life, a life transformed into the image of Jesus.  Even though the Messiah was handed over to be crucified and killed He will live on in the witness of the Church.  The Church is the Body of Christ, and as such, is a visible representation of Jesus.  When the world looks at a disciple it should see Christ living in him or her.  The Spirit of truth causes this witness to be convicting the world and drawing people to Jesus.  It is the Spirit’s job to work this out through the person waiting on God.  Let the Spirit work and follow His way.

Because you have been with Me from the beginning.  The Spirit of truth has been working in your life from the beginning.  The beginning of what?  For one of the Eleven this was the beginning of the public ministry of Jesus or possibly prior.  But for us He is talking about the testimony of when the Spirit of Truth started working in our lives, near or at our conversion.  It does not really matter when, but time spent waiting on the Holy Spirit is profitable for our witness for the kingdom.  This was to be taught and practiced until the end of time.

As forewarned by Jesus the times in which we live are hostile to the true disciple of Christ.  We need Jesus’ fiduciary, the Helper, the Comforter, the Advocate, and the faithful Witness to reach a world in need of a Savior.  Commit yourself to allowing the Spirit of truth to minister to you and grow in your testimony for the King.  By waiting on Him and not rushing forward ahead of the Spirit we become His testimony in a dark world.  He wants to work in you.  Give Him control and wait on the Spirit of truth with great hope.
