Show me Your ways, O LORD; teach me Your paths. Lead me in Your truth and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation; on You I wait all the day. (Psalm 25:4-5, NKJV, emphasis added)
Those separated from God do not seek truth or truth is not present in them (Part 4)
And their message has spread like cancer. Hymenaeus and Philetus are of this sort, who have strayed concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past; and they overthrow the faith of some. (2 Timothy 2:17-18, NKJV)
We are given the example of two who have strayed concerning the truth. A message of a lie will spread like cancer leading to death. Lies cause damage and lies concerning the truth of the faith will cause eternal death and separation from the Father. The person who is developing Christian character through waiting on God will not stray from the truth because he is led by the Lord in the way and paths of truth through submission to the Holy Spirit.
For of this sort are those who creep into households and make captives of gullible women loaded down with sins, led away by various lusts, always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. Now Jannes and Jambres resisted Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, disapproved concerning the faith; but they will progress no further, for their folly will be manifest to all, as theirs also was. (2 Timothy 3:6-9, NKJV)
False teachers love to come into people’s lives slyly by making the student slaves of sin that appeal to their selfish desires. The person driven by the self-life wants to please the self and will trade in the truth for the lie in order to be satisfied. The captive soul may even think they are a disciple of the Lord, as Judas was, and is always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. A person can be into learning for reasons other than knowing the truth. Check your motives when you study the Word of God. Is it to know the Lord and His truth, or is the desire to satisfy some selfish motive like power or position? The seminaries of the world are full of people like this. They have traded the truth to be called doctor or to become a bearer of great knowledge. Men who resist the truth, who fight against God, have corrupt minds. We saw earlier that they are destitute of the truth. We will see in the end what becomes of these people – their folly will be manifest to all. Be careful to learn with the goal of knowing the truth of God; and we learn through waiting upon Him with hope.
For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned to fables. (2 Timothy 4:3-4, NKJV)
This passage tells us some of the reasons for which people will turn from the truth. They will not endure sound doctrine: it is seen to be too much work to seek the pure word of truth because it does not suit their selfishness. But according to their own desires, because they have itching ears: they want to feel pleasure when they are being taught and will do what they can to satisfy themselves including finding teachers to give them what they want to hear – how to be prosperous and live well, which is contrary to what the Word of God teaches of being poor of spirit and dying well. We have a choice as to who will become our teachers: the one who teaches the truth or the one who teaches fables. We discern this by studying God’s Word and waiting on Him daily in truth with great hope.
This testimony is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith, not giving heed to Jewish fables and commandments of men who turn from the truth. (Titus 1:13-14, NKJV)
This Scripture is like the one previously discussed. We are to rebuke the false teacher. Sound doctrine does matter because it is the truth from which the person who is developing Christian character will not turn.
And many will follow their (false prophets) destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed. (2 Peter 2:2, NKJV)
The false teacher will blaspheme the truth of God for selfish gain. Anti-truth destroys where truth once lead to life under the direction of the Lord. Follow the sound doctrine of the truth because it matters.
