The Spirit has come to keep the link with Him unbroken every moment.  Praise God for the Holy Spirit!  We are so accustomed to thinking of the Holy Spirit as a luxury, for special times, or for special ministers and men.  But the Holy Spirit is necessary for every believer, every moment of the day.  (Andrew Murray)

With a new dispensation coming after the death, burial, and resurrection of the Master, Jesus makes a promise to all of His disciples (that includes you and I): the Holy Spirit will indwell you forever.

If you love Me, keep My commandments.  And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever – the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him or knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.  I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.  (John 14:15-18)

Obedience is a big part of allowing the indwelling Spirit to operate in your day to day living.  Living by the Spirit of Truth is meant to be counter-cultural (the world cannot receive it) and we should be empowered to do and be extraordinary.  Christians are not supposed to blend in with society, but be a distinctive Body of people, doing extraordinary things for the Kingdom of God.  We do nothing out of our own strength, but in the strength of Him who empowers, the Holy Spirit.

These things I have spoken to you while being present with you.  But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.  (John 14:25-26)

The Holy Spirit is to be working in multiple ways in the life of a disciple.  One way is to constantly be in the Presence of God; to enjoy and practice fellowship with Him.   The Holy Spirit also is the Helper; and we all need and desire help.  The Spirit also is received to be our Teacher; we all need to learn and be taught the ways of God and to be distinct from the world we live in as citizens of heaven.  He also comes to help us remember the words of Christ, for His glory and to remind us we have all things pertaining to life live for Him.

As you can see, we need the Spirit to be operating daily in our lives.  Do not quench the Spirit, but give up control to Him moment by moment.

Our Helper, our God.
