Show me Your ways, O LORD; teach me Your paths. Lead me in Your truth and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation; on You I wait all the day. (Psalm 25:4-5, NKJV, emphasis added)
Serve in truth with all you heart by waiting upon God with hope.
Only fear the LORD, and serve Him in truth with all your heart; for consider what great things He has done for you. (1 Samuel 12:24, NKJV)
Fear the LORD. We see the same themes running through the Scriptures we have encountered in this study. Fear of the Lord is seen as vital to our Christian experience. We have seen the person who is developing Christian character through waiting fears the Lord because of two reasons: (1) the believer sees himself as lacking any good thing to be used of God as far as abilities; and (2) the disciple sees God is holy and perfect and he himself is not.
Serve Him in truth. Serve God because it is due Him to be served. The Lord is the Master and we are His slaves. We are to be bondservants, slaves by choice; slaves because we want His protection and guidance over our lives. We have seen this in passages we have previously studied. Service that is acceptable to God must be done with a true motive and for the true purpose of honoring the Lord. Service does not include service done with ulterior motives which is evident of an unclean heart.
Serve Him with all your heart. Half-heartedness is not acceptable to the Lord. It is all or nothing. Nothing is to be held back from the Lord; all means all. Remember heart means from where we get our understanding, where we feel the truth of our convictions. Serve as you know the Lord is to be served – with all you have.
Consider what great things He has done for you. Consider means in the Hebrew to advise yourself and discern. When waiting on God, while serving Him, in whatever you do, consider things and He has done for you. Has He ever failed you? Will He now? Has He rescued you from a tough situation? Will He now? Does He deserve to be served with all our heart in all truth due to the grace He has extended to us by the great things He has done?
Prayerfully examine your life in light of the four points above involved in the growth in character through waiting upon Him and seeking His truth. Pray that the Holy Spirit works these four principles into your life.
